Privacy Policy

Who we are

Our Family School ("we," "us," or "our") operates the website ourfamilyschool.com and the Heart Words flash card game. We build simple literacy tools for families with early readers ages 3–7.

Our approach to privacy

We designed Heart Words with privacy as a priority. Here's the short version:

  • We do not show ads — ever
  • We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with third parties
  • We do not use third-party tracking cookies
  • Children never create accounts or enter personal information — only parents do
  • We collect only what is necessary to make the app work

Information we collect

When you create an account, we collect:

  • Email address — used for authentication, password resets, and optional progress notifications
  • Password — stored securely by our authentication provider (Supabase); we never see or store your password in plain text

If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive your name and email address from the provider. We do not receive or store your Google or Apple password.

When you use the app, we store:

  • Child profiles — a first name (or nickname), an emoji, and a color chosen by the parent. No last names, birthdates, photos, or other identifying information is collected about children.
  • Game results — scores, accuracy, streaks, and word-level progress for each profile. This data is used to show parents how their child is progressing.
  • Word settings — which word sets are selected and any custom words added by the parent
  • Email preferences — whether you want to receive streak reminders or weekly progress summaries

Information we do not collect

  • We do not collect children's full names, birthdates, addresses, phone numbers, or photos
  • We do not collect location data
  • We do not use cookies for tracking or advertising
  • We do not collect data from other apps or services on your device

How we use your information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Authenticate your account and keep it secure
  • Save your child's progress and game results
  • Send optional email notifications (streak reminders, weekly progress) — you can opt out at any time
  • Improve the app based on aggregated, anonymized usage patterns

We do not use your information for advertising, profiling, or any purpose unrelated to the Heart Words service.

Analytics

We use Plausible Analytics, a privacy-focused analytics tool that does not use cookies, does not collect personal data, and is fully compliant with GDPR, CCPA, and PECR. Plausible collects only aggregate, anonymous page-view data (e.g., which pages are visited and how often). No individual user can be identified.

Children's privacy (COPPA)

Heart Words is designed for use by parents and children together. We take children's privacy seriously:

  • Only parents (or guardians) create accounts. Children do not sign up, log in, or enter personal information.
  • Child profiles contain only a first name or nickname and a decorative emoji and color — no information that could identify a child on its own.
  • We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

Data storage and security

Your data is stored securely on Supabase, a trusted cloud platform built on PostgreSQL. All data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest. Access to your data is protected by Row Level Security — each user can only access their own data.

Third-party services

We use the following third-party services:

  • Supabase — authentication and database hosting
  • Vercel — website hosting and content delivery
  • Plausible Analytics — anonymous, cookie-free usage analytics
  • Google Sign-In (optional) — if you choose to sign in with Google
  • Apple Sign-In (optional) — if you choose to sign in with Apple

None of these services receive your data for advertising purposes.

Your rights

You have the right to:

  • Access your data — your profiles, game results, and settings are visible in the app at any time
  • Delete your data — you can delete individual child profiles from the app. To delete your entire account and all associated data, contact us at the email below.
  • Opt out of email notifications — manage your preferences in the app or contact us
  • Export your data — contact us to request a copy of your data

Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
